I just finished installing my roof rafters for my new garage. The ends of the ceiling joists are a little higher than the rafters. I want to cut this excess off. What is the best way? circular saw or sawzall or is there a better way? Thanks

Wow this is a little backwards. In normal practice these are cut prior to hanging the joists. I guess experience brings the benefit of foresight. Use a sawzall, and there is no need to be real neat about it. The cut will not significantly affect the load bearing capability of the joists.

sure you can toe nail but to save your self some time chalk a line and zig-zag the boards, this way you can hammer the nails straight into the blocks from both sides of the rafters, i would use 12s or 16s [ i believe a 12d is the min. to be up to code]
