It's all about greed. That's why they don't give a rat's azz about the public debt; they think of it as other peoples' debt.

Edit: Hey Woz, you think the debt is so trivial, do you know what percentage of the annual federal budget goes toward paying interest on the national debt? Didn't think so.

Good question.
One staunch conservative I am acquainted with will one minute preach the superiority of this capitalist country and the benefits of living here. For Bush's war every step of the way. The next minute, he's ranting about what he deems socialist activity running this country in the ground and how the Amendment giving the government the right to tax is unconstitutional. Conservatives can't seem to get things straight.
This is based on his own words. I am not a socialist; don't accuse me of being one.

Since when has the government used taxes to pay for that crap. They use borrowed money. Look at the debt they have run up in the last 5 1/2 years.

Conservatives are big believers in little government. The more taxes you have to pay, the bigger the government. In keeping with this idea, many conservatives--certainly most libertarians--feel that if you have to have government meddling in your life, they have 2 basic functions....facilitate commerce (build roads) and defend the nation--because these are things that most individuals can't do all by themselves.

So you're right, we really have no problem with taxes going to defense. But we do have HUGE problems with where all the rest of the tax money goes.

and for all you pissing about the debt, yeah, the dollar numbner sounds big, but do you know what percent of our GDP it is???

Didn't think so. 2.9%, kids. an unprecedented low, particularly for a nation at war. Our debt sounds really big because our GDP is THAT MUCH BIGGER. Now turn off the Michael Moore and get back to your Economics homework.

My answer will be in the form of rewording your question. Why do conservatives think it is a good idea to cut taxes in order to stimulate our economy while not minding taxes go to things like protecting our country?

Answer: Because it makes sense and it is working out great at this time.

The governments job is not to act as a charity but to act for the defense of the nation. If we were to get rid of socialism in this country our tax burden would decrease substantialy.

Because that is where our taxes should be going. Not to welfare and healthcare for people who don't feel like working!

Not to mention all the other bureaucracies that operate in our government. So much wasted money.

We don't hate paying taxes - we think EVERYONE should have to pay them.
We work hard for our money and why should I pay more in taxes than than someone who does not get off their duff and work hard. We just don't want to subsidize the lazy people. Liberals want to penalize me for making money - if I work harder I should have more...isn't that common sense?
