It has what looks like mold on it - dark streaks. I don't want to use anything too harsh, I just put in a landscape bed below and don't want to harm the shrubs..

There is a product, I forget what it is called, but it uses a heavy metal, (copper I think), to kill the mold and help prevent future recurrences.

If it is mold, then the problem is that there is too much moisture on the roof. This can be caused by shade, perhaps from an overhanging tree. It could also be caused by poor ventilation in the attic. This causes a temperature disparity between the roof and the air, resulting in moisture build-up on the roof, and therefore, mold.

my husband got up on the roof and used a pressure washer and sprayed it downward and all the green moss came off.it looks great now (of course he only used water)

call a roofing company and ask them how to clean it, most of them stain in time and i dont think there is any way safe for your plants. but you can ask an expert.

krud kutter (i think) make a roof cleaner. ask at a hardware store.
