When you buy Gold fish or any other fish at a store or win them at a carnival, they are placed in a plastic bag filled with water. They tend to always swim toward the corner of the bag and stay there. Why is that?

And I know it's not because the water is moving around a lot on the top because they do this even when the bag is left sitting.

Gold fish follow the water horizen line and believe that the lines defining the bag are really a way to deeper water and naturally try to find a place to hide during stress.

That is only because of the tiny space that they are confined in,
I don't know if they think if they swim toward the corner, that they are going to swim into the big tank, but it isn't only gold fish that actually do that all the fish placed in the bags do that, and when you take them out then you struggle because they are sitting in the corners. It is definitely not a lack of oxygen that causes them to do that

Maybe it's like hiding under a rock, or inside some hole in a rock or in coral reef in order to run away from a predator (or whatever that the fish has the natural instinct to run away from). The corner of a plastic bag, due to its pointy shape, makes the fish feel like it's being surrounded by something and thus makes it feel safe.

Unless a fish is sleeping on the bottom of a tank, it is always swimming to keep its balance in the water. A fish doesn't have to swim much to end up in the corner of a bag. Not all fish can turn around in a tight corner.
The answer: it ran out of room.

At first, they are just looking for a way out of the enclosure. They think they are trapped (and are assuming that on the other side is water also), so they are following edges that seem to be a way out. Too, when they are being carried the water jostles, but in the corner not as much, so they stay there.

that's been used as a fashion of euthanasia for an in damaging wellness goldfish, by using fact it rather is actual applications will decelerate in accordance to the temperature and it will pass into form of a "hibernation" from which it won't come again from. i'm hoping you're actually not asking this by using fact you desire to test on a healthful fish. that's for euthanizing a fish in basic terms, or perhaps then it rather is not seen the main painless way. the superb thank you to "placed down" a ill or loss of life fish is to place it right into a smaller field with water from its aquarium, after which place some drops of clove oil ( obtainable at maximum wellness, scented oils, and so on. places) into the water. The lively factor in clove oil is euganol. Cloves and clove oil has been utilized in dentistry for hundreds, if not longer, of years as a young anesthetic. The consequence it ought to have on the fish would be considered one of being "placed below" with the aid of anesthesia. you need to equate it to overdosing on valiums or some thing, and is seen to be painless for the fish. If much less is used and the fish is remote from the clove oil water quckly after it "knocks out", it rather is operated on (like if it had fin rot that mandatory to be trimmed off, and so on.), and if placed in clean flowing water back it may wake back up. high priced koi with wellness issues are on occasion anesthesized this type whilst they're recent technique surgical procedures to get rid of tumors and such. some vets additionally produce different chemical compounds which do an identical factor.

Maybe it's because the fish sees it's own reflection on the side of the bag, and so it cruzes over to say hello thinking it's another fish, and then BONK it hits it's face on the side of the bag and becomes so stunned that it just sits there!

Most fish simply want to get away from what ever is looking at them and the corner is the farthest point from that.

well i know why this hapenned to me eveytime i bought a fish they would stay by the corners for hours then they will start moving the reason why is because its been moved to a new habitat and the fish needs to adapt there is a myth that if you move one fish to so many diferrent places it would doe because i wouldnt resist adapting to so many habitats :)
