I'm in a similar boat as StephenB with the advanced placement classes, and I know I'm blessed with great kids in high school. Most are not rich or super smart, but they are so dedicated that it fills your heart with every one of their victories. This year I had normal, hardworking kids go to Harvard, Yale, and Stanford (and yes I teach at a public high school). By the way, my high school is by no means considered top notch.
I also teach part time at a community college. There is little satisfaction in that job (other than the $) b/c you do not share in their struggles and joys as much. I feel like a robot (where at the high school I feel like a mother/father/ priest/buddy/disciplinarian/ role model)

Wow...odd that you ask this because I just made this exact choice for real. Honest. I chose the High School. Why? Because I can have a greater impact on the lives of more people at a critical stage in their growth. At the college, not so. It would just be rote teaching...same thing, over and over and over. Dull.

Besides, I teach AP science courses so I tend to get the cream of the crop anyway; and they actively seek guidance and really DO listen to the advice I give them.

"so-so State College" The top notch....it would make me feel scared and intimidated. Trust me......I'm from a middle class family...just your average Joe and I taught Spanish at a top notch elementary school. These kids have gone to Hawaii for vacation, leave school early on Fri. to go to a Broadway play in NY, and I just didn't fit in.

top notch high school. it's more fun, and more challenging teaching teens at a crucial time in their young lives where a lot of problems are exhibited. think of the junior and senior proms. it's the most fun yrs in a teenage's life. and to think you are responsible in molding them or have a hand in their discipline. it's a great feeling of job satisfaction and career achievment. i remember my high sch teachers with great admiration and respect. i learned a lot.
