Cats
Independant
Don't need to be walked
Don't chew your shoes or furniture
- get a scratch post or they will use the furniture
- catlitter box inside the house smelly
- if they go outside and get in a fight, they can catch FIV (Feline HIV)
-aren't obediant like dogs
small enough to have in your bed
catch mice and insects
food and vet maintenance is usually cheaper
most renters will allow a cat over a dog.
Dog
lovable, likes to cuddle more than cats
-need to be walked
-more expensive to feed
no cat litter box - although potty training sucks
fun to train
can guard your house
many different sizes
are normally good with more pets
-can chew everything in your home
-expensive pet bills
hard to have in an apartment or rented home
It depends on your lifestyle and how much time you have to dedicate.
Puppys are like babies. They need a lot of attention and training time, but when they are, they are like a part of the family and very fun. Puppies are a big responsibility and are not a good pet for someone who works 9-5pm. Smaller dogs need to be walked more than large dogs because of their energy. If you don't they will get bored and trash your home. If you have children, start with a puppy so they can get used to them. Some adult dogs see children as rivals and will be jealous and can potentially hurt them. When at the pet store or do some research, find out the best breed for children.
Kittens are easier to potty train and cats are independant and don't need a lot of maintenance. If they are outdoor, you don't have to worry about a litterbox. Make sure you spay/neuter them because they have babies like crazy. Male cats will spray pee all over the walls if he isn't neutered. And be careful with male kittens. 3 out of 4 kittens will get a uterine tract infection before the age of 3 and many can die from it and there is nothing you can do. I would start off with a female kitten or an older male.
