Does anyone know a good method for making sure a background color for an image blends in with the t-shirt color? I am using transfers for dark color shirts. I have always had difficulty matching the shades of the shirt and transfer.

I'm not sure why you want to match the transfer to the shirt - you can always cut out the transfer and eliminate the background. If it were me, I would make the background an obvious contrast and not worry about matching at all. It's hard to make a case without knowing the details of the image, whether it's a photo or a graphic, etc...

But if you want your image to fade into the shirt, or if you're doing graphic or line work, perhaps you want to investigate silk screening, and print only the colour you want onto the T. It's pretty simple to do yourself.
