First off I am not military and way over 21. How is it right that a citizen of the U.S can join the Military at age 18 and go to war to protect our freedom but is unable to go to the local 7-11 and buy a beer? Can anyone explain to me how this is right?

It used to be 18 in some states, but certain things require a greater maturity. You can't let a 2 year old drive a car can you?

In the military they are given orders. It is reasonable to think that they are more than capable of doing the duty of protecting the country under supervision of superior officers. However, when they drink they do not have someone that is telling them to stop, or don't drive. This is a mental maturity that a lot of people do not have, even after you turn 21.

No it is not fair. And while each state is free to decide what the drinking age will be, federal funds for roads are tied to the State making the drinking age 21. I remember the drinking age in Florida was 18 for liquor and beer for a while until they were forced to change it in the 80s. South Carolina allowed sales of beer and wine to 18 and above. The place to start changing this is at the Federal level. Many taverns were hit hard especially in college towns when the states were forced to change the law to receive funding for roads. It's just real easy for politicians to cave in on this issue especially when people this young do not have any type of lobby for their rights.

Because people don't care about justice or freedom. The great cause of the day is safety. It's American and it's rather disgusting that it has so many supporters.

Your old enough for prison,
your old enough to vote,
your old enough to drive,
your old enough to own a gun,
your old enough to smoke cigarettes (in most states, 19 in others),
your old enough to be forced to die for your country...
But they will be DAMNED if you get to enjoy a beer on your own incentive.

Prohibition laws are absolutely destructive to our society. They cause more damage than they will ever prevent.
They kill more people, cost more money, and cause more crime than any other set of policies ever thought up.

I can't necessarily tell you that it is right or wrong, MADD helped pass the federal 21 minimum drinking age. And as much as that stinks its the law. Maybe it's to try and ensure your own safety as well as the lives of others

Never understood it myself. It is probably left over from Prohibition days to satisfy the little old Ladies down south.

Excellent question, and I don't think anyone can explain how that is right, because it is so very very wrong! I think it further shows how illogical, outdated and plain confused our justice system can be.

Because at age 18 most teenagers are too stupid to not drink and then get in their car.

Hell, most college students are too stupid to not drink and drive

Cause we would rather you kill an "enemy" of our choosing than the child of a rich person on the highway.
