In the song Sylvia's mother by Dr. Hook, mum is telling ex her own opinion, was this what Sylvia would have wanted if she had known he was on the phone?

If she was doing so, in what she considered to be her daughters best interest, knowing her daughter as she did, then yes. If she was doing it from her own self interest then no.

Yes.
Sometimes it's easier to go back than to move forward...doesn't always mean it's the right thing to do. But Sylvia had obviously moved on and was making a new life for herself - there had (obviously) been a problem within their relationship - so Sylvia's Mother was just doing what mums do best...putting their childrens welfare above everything else.
Anyway, if Syvia's mother HAD let them talk on the phone - we wouldn't have got to listen to a great song!
What the song DOESN'T tell you is that he found out where Syvlia was going - followed her there - and proclaimed his undying love for her........
She told him to flick off!
