Yes, my eye contact is poor, and there is no excuse for it, but I meant nothing by it, and until I turned my back and walked out, I had no clue this person was going to react to the tic, if in fact that is what the individual was reacting to by making the nasty comments. I have to assume it was the tic that set the server off, since I gave the person NO other reason to react.

I think, if I were you, I would go to that server and tell them just what you have told us. The server is probably a very immature person, or not very nice... and probably hates their job, which is certainly not your fault. Having somebody like yourself actually take the time to point this out would be
1) somewhat humiliating to that server, and
2) very educational for that server, plus
3) it would be a load off your mind, and
4) the manager may or may not get involved.

I wouldn't just let it go, and I also wouldn't be totally upset with the server. They probably get treated pretty badly by lots of people, and are very sick of it. Great chance to let them know that things are not always as they seem.

I would try to explain to the server about the tic and, if they still cop an attitude, talk to the manager. While the server should do their best to be polite to customers, there is a limit to how much abuse people will take in the name of customer service. Don't get me wrong - Eye rolling is a minor offense, but this may have been the end to a day filled with insults. I would be annoyed if you rolled your eyes at me that is unless I understood it was a tic.

In your case you didn't mean any harm but regardless if you did or not the server should keep themselves under control because I am a firm believer in the customer is always right. (unless the customer is hauling off and hitting the server.) They have the job they have because of people like you who are a paying customer in the establishment. I am sure this person has experienced things way worse than what you described and if that person can't pull themselves together they will be going through many jobs till they get it right. I would have spoken to the manager and not have said anything to the server. Not because the name calling it self was bad but the fact that this person shouldn't act that way when dealing with customers.

I live by the economic philosophy that the "Customer is ALWAYS right."

That snot should have been reported to the manager and fired on the spot. I pay good money that I've worked too hard to get to put up with the lame, lazy and ignorant attitude of $5.00-an-hour, no ambition loser! And the older I get, the more "Turretts' Syndrome" I tend to be (look it up; you'll get it!)

Customer service is my pet peeve; I can even tolerate bad food if the service was good, polite, and willing to make it right. But being verbally attacked by a punk employee? Ahh, Hell No!

One recourse I've used is to contact the corporate office by letter and include the store #, the manager's name, what he/she did or did not do to help. Let them know that the conduct of their employee(s) is (are) unacceptable and that you will not tolerate it.

Give them the opportunity to respond and offer a resolution. If none is received within a reasonable abount of time, send another letter and let them know that, not only will you not be visiting their establishment anymore, but you will do everything in your power to discougage your family, friends and acquaintences from frequenting their place of business ever again. I guarantee that the lost revenue to the business would be a whole lot more than it would cost to fire and replace that punk!

Talk to her manager....there is no reason on earth the server should have reacted that way, even if you were actually rolling your eyes. I am a server myself, and that person could definitely use the lesson about never being rude to guests.

I once watched a show where the flight attendant was being treated very badly for no reason by a passenger. The flight attendant took the bread from the meal that was about to be served and went to the bathroom toilet. She proceeded to wipe the bread slice around the toilet bowl and put it back on the meal plate and gave it to the man who was rude. He ate it. Now, how much do you really want to make people mad who serve you. Try not to think so hard genius.

The customer is always right is what I was taught in the service business. Apologize to the manager that you did not mean to offend her and you may find out it is her attitude a lot anyway if nothing else manager usually gives comps.... to make up for poor service. It's not like your complaining exactly your apologizing, right:-)

I know that my family has owned a restaurant for 35 years and the waiters, servers, whoever is working there, we get crapped on. We get sarcastic, bad, rude people everyday. Nice, easygoing people are rare. I'm sorry but dealing with people everyday, especially when your serving food is a rough job and they probably had a horrible day with customers. Maybe you should have explained it to him, sorry it happened but next time think about you serving hungry, rude people all day.

Hey! It wasn't your fault that your eye contact is poor...If I am in shoes, I will just walk away and you don't need to explain your eye contact problem because of three reasons:

1.) Your dignity will be lost

2.) You will make it worse

3.) Server will be friend somehow

Call back and speak to the manager. (you need to get this off of your mind - so that's why I'm saying this) Explain to the manager what you just told us. Hey, it can't hurt. The person who got po'd at you may think twice before they judge other ppl and ruin their nights by making comments. Good luck :)
