the most likely cause is there are multiple programs running in the "background" that you don't see.

They are probably starting up automatically when you turn your computer on. If you go to:

Start > Run > Type "msconfig" > Press Enter

Go to the last tab "Startup" and click "Disable All"

Then reboot your computer.

This will stop all those programs from running.

Also, go into:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

and get rid of any uneeded programs or anything that looks suspicious that you know you did not install.

Don't delete any of the "Windows Hotfix" those are ok.

By moving over from dial up to broadband, your computer is more open to being hit by viruses, spyware, adware, malware, and other harmful programs/software. Most likely, you are using Internet Explorer as your internet browser. This is what you should do:

1. Clear out your browser settings:
a. Open up Internet explorer.
b. Click on "Tools" from the toolbar and then choose "Internet
Options"
c. Under the "General Tab," click on the "Delete Cookies"
button in the middle of the window
d. Click the "Delete Files" button, which is located near the
"Delete Cookies" button
e. Check the checkbox that says "Delete all Offline Content"
f. Click "Ok"
g. Click the "Clear History" button, located near the bottom of
the "General" tab
h. Click "Ok"

2. Download the Microsoft Windows Defender (Beta 2), by
clicking on the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en

3. Install the Microsoft Windows Defender and download its updates

4. Go to Http://www.download.com and download Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE

5. Install Ad-Aware SE and download its updates

6. Obtain the lastest viruses definitions for your antivirus software (Norton or McAfee)

9. Open your antivirus software, microsoft defender, and Ad-Aware SE and pertain a scan for each one

10. Remove all detect files

13. From your "Start" button, click on "Programs" - "Accessories" - "System Tools" - "Disk Cleanup"

14. Check the following checkboxes:
- Downloaded Program Files
- Temporary Internet Files
- Tempoary Files
- WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files
- Temporary Offline Files
- Offline Files
- Catalog files for the Content Indexer

15. Click "Ok" to clean up your C: drive

16. Empty out your recycling bin

Press Ctrl+alt+del, this will either bring up task manager or you will have to click on task manager then you will want to go into Processes and click CPU until you get the highest number on the top, click end process, and then it should speed up, then you will want to do a full Virus scan, and anti-Spyware scan.... this should keep your computer running smoothly

now computers after 6 months do start to lag, (people running servers reinstall their OS every month to 2 months) just a little FYI

Check for virus infections. If no infection, take a close look at your antivirus program. I recently had to uninstall a Norton program because it totally bogged down my computer to the point where I could not turn it off.

I changed to Trend Micro, and that solved my problem.

You've got too many programs in your system. Try cleaning it up and getting rid of downloads that you are not using frequently, you can always re-load them when you need them. Try a program like 'wash and go' which cleans up your computer after each use. When finished on the internet...always go to your tools bar and delete cookies, files and history...this too can slow you down. Good Luck... L.Butler

You probably have to many programs stored in your computer. Try deleting some of the programs that you don't use. That happened to me too and I just have to get rid of the programs that are junk. If that doesn't work out, try contacting your technical support via e-mail or phone.

if u have too many programs running simultaneously, that might slow ur comp. down. u can check all the processes that are running and the CPU time that they are consuming by:

Ctrl+Alt+Del --> Processes tab
