Because that the art of an optical illusion; to trick the eye and make your body appear flattering or unflattering. Stripes going across just make your body look wider while stripes going down, give you the appearance of a slimmer body.

no, the stripes make u look thinner, because i a have a dress, and it just hides ur curves or ur fat watever u want to call it.... but hadnt u noticed that if u have a lil gut and u wear a striped shirt ur gut doesnt shoe because everything blends in lol...

i no, thats the same with me!!! the thing about stripes across the belly is that it brings out the wideness in that area that most people have, which is why people think that it tends to make them look fatter.

its not wider its thinner, thats why you look thinner than you already are. I'm not exactly sure why but i think its because it hides the unwanted curves.
