What most individuals do not know is that the National Geographic Society has documented bull sharks sometimes hundreds of miles up freshwater rivers in the US. One was tagged, tracked and located as far north up the Mississippi as Illinois. What permits bull sharks to enter and hunt prey in freshwater is their unique ability to maintain their salt balance due to their unique kidney structure and function. Bull sharks while usually docile in warm water environments, are more aggressive in cold water environments. And, some well respected scientists believe the number of shark attacks attributed to Great White sharks are actually attacks by bull sharks. Take special note of attacks by bull sharks many years ago miles upstream in a NJ river which killed two boys swimming in the river. The sharks were caught days later in the river and the remains of the boys found in their digestive tract.
