To make it easier to write on the fabric, iron the fabric to some freezer paper. Trust me, this makes a HUGE difference. Use a special fabric marker and iron it before sewing it to the quilt. To be safe, you might want to do a test run and wash it before sewing to the quilt, just to be sure your label won't disappear when you wash it. The zigzag stitch would work, but it isn't that difficult to fold over the edges (iron in the crease to make it easier), and sew it to the back of the quilt. You can make it any size you want. In fact, I like to cut the fabric bigger than I think I'll need, write all of the info I want on it, and then cut it to size. Some things to consider including on your label: your name and location, the date, the occasion, the baby's birth info (date, weight, length), and the parents' names. If you name the quilt, include that info. If there's an interesting story behind the quilt, write it down.
As far as "care" directions, I wouldn't bother attaching it to the quilt. Just print out the care and cleaning instructions and include it in the gift box.

You still at this baby quilt hon? lol... yeah, sounds like you're on the right track...I'd turn in the edges of your label and top stitch it to the quilt back, just so it's durable (or did you say that). The perm. markers aren't that permenant though...My Mum does that with her quilts, and they do fade in time.
I used to quilt in my name, either by hand or free-stitching on the machine...but by your last question...lol, I don't think you want to go that route.
Any good at embroidery?
What about looking into inkjet transfers? I know it works good for t-shirts....what about putting something made that way onto a small piece of fabric the same way as above...? Just a thought.
:)
I was thinkin aout you last night (man, that sounds so wrong)...seriously though...I popped into my local quilt shop the other day and saw that it was only 30 bucks to have a baby quilt - quilted. Just FYI...dunno what pricing would be like in your area...but it's a thought.

It sure would! Labels are a fun way to dress up a quilt. Be sure to put pertinent information (your name, who the baby is, date, etc.) so they will always have a special keepsake.
I like the idea of a large label because it helps to make it more visible to a tired parent doing laundry.
Use a Pigma pen. I prefer the Micron fine point pens. You can buy fine point ones at your fabric store, or in the scrapbook section of a lot of craft stores.

Use iron on transfer paper to print you instructions right off the computer. You can size it to any patch of fabric and heat set it so it will never run like some permanent markers can, they can blur a bit too.
You can get the paper anywhere, WalMart, Walgreens, office supply strores.
