For some people, cheating is the only way they can win. They have no gamming skills, so they revert to cheating. In this instance, you are 100% correct in your argument. They are just wasting time, not gaining the real fun/experience of the game, and are typically just a sore loser.
However, what about those that “cheat” after say… like they have already beaten the game? Does that make them sore losers? I mean they have already won… Typically, (and even I am guilty of this) I will utilize a cheat after successfully beating a game to gain a fresher/different view of the game. After I beat a game, (especially if I have purchased it) there is no more interests in the game – I would usually probably never play it again. However, with the inclusion or new experience of having, unlimited life, or extra money, or access to your full arsenal – wouldn’t that make the game a more fun experience? That would certainly motivate you to play it again as you would be experiencing something new.
Also, it is worth mentioning that although they are called “cheats,” not all codes are the product of some diabolical person hacking the system for personal gain. Some cheats are actually built in by the makers of the game for your fun. Some of them even have a cheat code section, where you enter in a controller combination or an access code to unlock them for game play. So, while I agree with your argument – you must understand that cheating is not like the real world – it is for entertainment only – so because you can cheat there does not always mean you’ll cheat in life. Same as killing in a game does not mean you will kill in real life.

I asked a similar question, never really got what I considered a good answer. Honestly, cheating takes all the fun of video games, in my opinion. I used to play Diablo online, until I learned to cheat, then it became boring and pointless.
The only games I cheat at are the ones I play with my friends and siblings, where cheating is really the point of the game.

For me with most Roleplaying Games, I cheat on the first go aroud to know what the story is and what happens in the end so I could chose the actions for my character to fit the best ending. Then I wait a week after i beat it so i can mostly forget the general codes & stuff then go playing the game knowing the storyline along the way choosing the actions for my character. But think about this. It's no different then going out and buying the novel based on the game like the old Baldur's Gate series...

People cheat because they're lazy and they think that it's cool to be able to move along alot faster or do more flourishing moves than you could do while playing the game regularly (how it's supposed to be played). A question to go along with yours, if the game makers want you to play the game regularly, however, why would they even have cheat codes available? Another question to ponder right there.

Daughter's b/f is always looking up cheats on the www. I don't understand why he needs cheats to play. When I was his age (Yes, there were games back then, well, a little bit older) I had to figure everything out the hard way.

Shhhhh, calm down. You're right.
However, there is a whole generation out there who think it's okay to cheat, even on tests at school. They think plagiarism is alright, too; and, check out the so-called "homework help" on this very site, and you'll find many kids baldly asking for the answers, without any shame.
Bottom line: either cheating has somehow become acceptable, or we have thousands of parents out there who are too stupid or too preoccupied to notice that their little darlin's are worthless cheating losers.

I totally agree...the point of the games (or so I always thought) was to figure them out on your own then you would have the satisfaction of beating it. My step-son is always looking for cheat codes for his games, and he is a smart kid who is fully capable of figuring it out on his own. I think it comes from society's brains washing that you are entitled to everything you want, the got to have it right now, and the T.V. "all problems can be solved in 30 min." issue. Today's youth is apathetic and lazy and want everything given to them.

well some people do it just for the experience or some people just use a cheat on one level but when that happens, it can be very tempting to use cheats

all cheats aren't bad.some are for different outfits or even better ones are for levels that you can only play if you put in a code so i wouldn't say that all cheat codes are bad.
