All of the people who answered "mercury" are wrong. Mercury thermometers are still legal and you can order them from medical or chemical supply houses. Mercury has a silvery color.

The red liquid is alcohol with a red dye in it.

I just ordered 60 alcohol (red dye) thermometers for my chemistry class today from Sargent-Welch Science Supplies company.

the glass thermomether is filled with mercury or red-colored alcohol and the liquid is free to move from the bulb into the tube. When air temperature increases, the liquid in the bulb expands, forcing it to rise up the tube. When air temperature decreases, the liquid cools and contracts, drawing it out of the tube and back into the bulb.

It is NOT mercury if it is red. It is an alcohol based mixture. More common these days than the "silver liquid" thermometers that contain mercury due to toxicity reasons.

The answer is not mercury.Mercury is a metal therefore has a metallic color. There is mercury in a thermometer but if you hold it for a while and let it settle long enough you can see the little bead of mercury underneath the red dye that gives the thermometer its red color.Mercury is a metal that remains fluid at room temperature. It is also extremely toxic to humans.
