juana. just add the 6 feet and the 8 feet together. what is 6 + 8? then add the 10 inches and the 9 inches together. what is 10 + 9? this is a trick question, because you have to remember that any 12 inches also equals 1 foot. when you add 10 +9 inches together, you will get a number that is larger than 12 inches.
you have to decide what to do. normally, the answer you are looking for not have any answer that has more than 12 inches. you will need to make 12 of the inches in your answer equal to 1 foot. adding one more foot to your original number (add 6 + 8 + 1) together for the total number of feet, and then sutracting 12 inches from your original number (add 10 + 9) and then (minus12) to get your final answer.
