Fabrics which are good candidates for embroidery have an even weave to them. You can adapt any fabric to embroidery by using a product called waste cloth. It's a sturdy fabric with even spaced weave. You place it on the reverse of the cloth you want to embroider. It provides guidance and stability during an embroidery project, and it is designed to be pulled apart at the completion of the project leaving no trace. You can find this item in with counted cross stitch and embroidery supplies at your local craft and hobby store.

Depends what you are decorating. Sheets, pillowcases, clothing, apron, table runners, something to frame, or curtains?
