Expression should always be simplified in the following order:
Grouping symbols first, from the inside out.
Exponents and roots, from left to right.
Multiplications and divisions, from left to right.
Additions and subtractions, from left to right.
In your problem, there are no grouping symbols or exponents. The division comes first.
40 - 3 / 4 + 2
40 - 0.75 + 2
You now have an addition and a subtraction... the same "level" of operation. Do them in order from left to right.

Convention is to multiply & divide first, then add & subtract.
so you have:
40 -3 / 4 + 2 = 40 -0.75 + 2 = 41.25
If there is a power, you do that first.

you always do multiplication/division first, and THEN addition/subraction.
after figuring out PEMDAS you work the equation from left to right.
