When I moved here people kept saying washer and dryer should be stored in real storage. The pair I have currently are in my garage. Will they still work over time? How long can they stay before they don't work again?

well I will tell you from experience that it won't hurt anything as long as they are kept dry and clean so keep that in mind and some cement can absorb and let off moisture so it would be ideal to put them both on a piece of lawan bord which is available at any lumber yard ok !

Why would it be bad to store them in a garage when a lot of times, the washer and dryer hook-ups are in the garage? Besides, every storage place I've ever seen is basically just a garage, bare cement floor, very little in the way of insulation, no climate control. Why pay $50 a month for a storage space when you have basically the same thing in your garage? As long as they are kept dry, they should work when you hook them back up again no matter where you store them.

drain the water lines, there isn't anything that can freeze or go bad, they're both just motors and gears.
