I sell yp advertising and have for 10 years. Here is some free advice on building a good ad. It all depends on your type of business, but lets say you're a Plumber. Remember you have the time it takes to turn the page to catch a buyers attention. A headline at the top that makes them stop. SINK STINK!!!

CALL 333-4444 and we'll be right out. Then Pictures of someone fixing it or a lady with her hands on her head and then be sure to let them know who you are, how many years you have serviced the area, address if you have a retail location, affiliations with bbb or chamber or master plumber etc..license #.
Who- what- where- when- how- why. Not too wordy but add things like bullets for sinks drains toilets kitchen and washing machine lines etc...
Track by putting in a remote line available through the utility co. or ask the customer. It takes seconds to say Hi I'll be happy to answer your questions, could you tell me how you found us? Could I ask you where the problem is and that address and I'll get right to dispatching a truck. Change according to your business.
I offer free ad design with contract for placement and if you are building your own, the yp company will need color seps. If your not art savvy, put down your ideas and ask them to build one similar. One more thing, I offer some discounted rates in most markets, the costs are based on the same cost per 1000 as anyone else, but the utility books don't seem to negotiate.

I personally think that the yellow pages are growing obsolete and they charge way too much for ad space. I recommend that if you really want to stand out, you should get your vehicle or your companies vehicle, wrapped. Depending on what you sell or what type of business you have, we could design a wrap that grabs your markets attention. Your vehicle can be your own moving billboard.

You can track the response by simply asking new customers how they found you or by putting a special offer (discount?) in the ad. Just remember what John Wanamaker (of Wanamaker's in Philadelphia) said, "I know that 50% of the money I spend on advertising is wasted, but I don't know which 50%." Space advertising is very hard to track. You just have to accept that it is part of a cumulative effort to get your name out there.
