Something I've noticed is that people who sing or sing and act always have official websites, but people who just act don't have official websites, just imbd profiles. Why is this?

Actors have official websites too. Singers tend to have official websites because the website is sponsored by their own record label. Actors don't have record labels or something like it.

Ok, so some actors have websites, but a lot of them don't. Still there's a skew toward singers having sites because 100% of them do, while there are many actors with no website.

I think this is because an actor's job is so much more movie event based, where the movie is the product, and not so much based on packing performances week in week out. With music, the public is very much purchasing the artist, so the singer/band is the product, therefore a website is one obvious & necessary tool in maintaining as much accessibility to the public as possible. With movies, the movie is the product, not the actor. Even when it is a huge production like War of The Worlds and Tom Cruise is clearly the main bill, it is the combination of elements such as star director, excellent cast, storyline, and the promise of never-before-seen action &/or special effects which is really being sold.

I guess one proof of the pudding is the James Bond franchise, and the replaceability of actors in general. You replace the main guy and the product still sells. And when they package movies it's never "Oh, we have to have x actor or the movie doesn't exist." No, it's "Too bad x and y were both booked, so let's move to our third choice which is y, and now we've got more money to get a as the leading lady and q as the villain." This just couldn't work this way in music. Music Artist = Product, so no music artist, no product. I mean if Shakira is sick or injured, her concert that night gets cancelled. Christina Aguilera can't just step in and take her place. If something should happen to Tom Hanks though, you can be sure there'll still be a DaVinci Code II and probably III. Madonna croaks, no more Madonna albums (unless they pull a Tupac.)

One more thing, with movies audiences don't skip a beat when a stuntman does certain stunts, or an actor gets completely replaced in some shots with CGI, but remember Milli Vanilli? It's a really big deal to music fans if they find out that the product they're getting is actually fake, never mind that they still have the songs...no, it's the artist they're purchasing and that should be authentic.

As final proof, you'll notice that every movie does have a website. 100% of them. Because the movie is the product just like the music artist.

My guess would be that...as a singer or musician, your full popularity potential may not have been reached...so the internet is a great way of reaching out to more fans. Whereas actors and actresses are concerned...their fame is already well established so they probably spend more time on acting and reading scripts or even writing their own ideas for movies.
However, I would have to bet that alot of the band websites, may not be run by the band itself...probably just a loyal fan, or a PR rep or something like that. Actors and actresses do have alot of fan websites though.

Cus they want to promote there music so there fan base will grow, Actors have enough trouble with the press trying to get the next scoop..and they are resricted by the companies so they won't spill the scrects of the movies that haven't come out yet..

Well because singers can also get by in acting, but not all actors can sing.

Actors have web sites too, all you have to do is type in their name in the Yahoo search bar and a whole list comes up in their name. If the actor you like doesn't have a web site you like, maybe you could make your own about him/her!

Go to http://www.smplanet.com/webpage/webpage.html for help on how to make your own site!
