Before email it used to be two days (one week at the most). Now days things are less formal, but if you want to be implicitly formal, answer the letter within a few days of receipt.
If you answer after a week, begin with a short sentence referring to the time lapse that it took to answer the letter. For example:
00/00/00
Dear Xxxxxx,
I got your letter 00/00, and I'm just now getting to it!
That makes it ok to wait as long as a month. If it's longer than a month, you'll need to add in a "Sorry, Xxxxx, I'm just now getting to it!"
Hope this helps!

We live in a life now days where it is extremely fast paced. Just about no one writes letters anymore because they are extremely busy and don't have enough time not just to write them but to mail them out and respond to the next letter. Most people as a general rule know that everyone else is just as busy as they are. We have resorted to computers because in our world that is the fastest way to get a response unless they are standing right there in the room with you. SMILE I think that in order to expect someone to respond to your letters quickly you must do the same in return. Although we do live in a world where there are sooo many things to do that it is understandable if someone doesn't get back to you as quickly as you would like. The general rule of thumb that I listed above is to respond right away because that is what you would like. Once you show others that you will respond in a quick manner then you will find that they will respect your wishes.
