Well Actually Whoever Is Elected Next Is An Initial Threat To FEMA, As They Will Continue To Need Funding Even Though Hurricane Katrina Survivors Can't Survive On A FEMA Check. The Government Has Not Been Able To Assist Me, Nor My Family Since We Live In A Small Town And Are Poor. The Government Has Overlooked Many Subjects Regarding The Poverty Crisis Which Hasn't Improved. If You Are Going 2 Prepare For The Next Natural Disaster, You Should Be Just As Ready For That As You Are To Step Off Your Porch.

No, FEMA is suppose to be the planners of how to respond to a disaster and a organizer of government response. You are responsible for your own safety. You should have a months worth of food and water at all times. You should also be armed to defend yourself and your family. You should have cash on hand so that you can buy things if the power is out. Take the time to think out a plan for most emergencies and put it in writing. There are 35.000,000 web sites that can give you ideas of how to prepair for disaster. By the way, I survived Hugo, I know how bad it can be. Also don't build your home in the bottom of a hole, like New Orleans.

No, preparing for any natural disaster is such a difficult task I don't think any organization could ever be fully ready for disasters. Right now, in the Atlantic there is a pretty decent tropical low with the potential to become the first hurricane of the year and its slowly churning towards Florida, if it does indeed become a hurricane and hits Florida, will FEMA be ready? I very much doubt it.

You had to be here to believe it.We are so prepared .All you govt. suckers wait on line I'm prepared .

You can't use Louisiana as an example. Their problems were self induced. You also need to understand that storms such as Katrina's usually happen maybe once a century. The destruction area caused by that storm was larger than Great Britain. (that's quite large by my measurement). Florida has bounced back rather well from its hurricanes, so has Georgia, the Carolina's, Texas, and others. The states are responsible to establishing the guidelines and the rules of engagement.

I live in Canada and I don't think anyone is prepared for anything anywhere. Because you don't know what is going to hit next or where. It takes time to mobilize. What if it is an hemorrhagic flu?Quite different from a hurricane.
How are the folks in New Orleans now? Or has everybody forgotten about them?

I agree with the people who understand that the federal government isn't really that committed to an individual's welfare. It is largely the responsibility of one's state to ensure that safeguards are placed in the event of an emergency (remember, the basis for American federalism is state's rights -- check your Bill of Rights!). However, the price you pay for freedom in America is the right to be left alone ... so don't expect the federal or state government to be able to save you in the wake of a natural disaster.

There are places here and there where the disaster scenarios
have been played out and the right thing actually seems to happen.
However, generally, no. Between the lack of funding, the
huge upheaval caused by response to Katrina and the fact
that we have NEVER been prepared, we're pretty much toast.

As far as FEMA is concerned, the next natural disaster is the upcoming election.

I dont expect the governement to take care of me. If there is a dang category 5 hurricane heading toward galveston, then i am getting the heck out of dodge, I am taking my pets and getting out. I am not just going to sit around and wait for the government and I am sure as heck not going to expect them to support me for a freaking year because I am too dang lazy to get a freaking job and move on.
