You didn't say what kind of computer, so we don't really know, but, if it's a Mac, there's a Control Panel (in X it's a System Preference thingy), Start-up items.

There are things set to automatically launch at start up, uncheck them, or remove them (I forget how the interface works, exactly).

If this isn't clear enough, go to the Help for your computer (not for particular programs, but the Help available from the Desktop) and look for disable start up items.

There are a couple of programs that can help you do it:

Spybot S&D has a tool to manage your startup folder, and it's also one of the better anti-spyware programs. http://www.safer-networking.org/

Also Hijack This will do it, but you have to be more careful with this program as it is a little more advanced. http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Certain programs, like Windows Messenger, can only be disabled from the control panel. If you go to the Add/Remove Windows components section and uncheck the box next to it, then reboot, that will keep the pesky little bugger from coming back.

if you're on windows computer...

1) click the start button (lower right corner of your screen)
2) click "run ..."
3) enter "msconfig" and hit "ok"

THIS PROGRAM CONTOLS VITAL STUFF ON YOUR MACHINE AND COULD BREAK EVERYTHING SO DON'T MESS AROUND, JUST ...

4) click the "startup" tab
5) look for the programs you do *not* want to run at startup and uncheck the boxes for these
6) click "apply"
7) click "ok"

the program needs to restart your machine for the changes to take effect.
