It essentially never rains from April 15 through October 15, but thereafter until the next April 15 it can rain like in biblical proportions with floods, mudslides, etc. The lowest temp in winter is perhaps 29 and that is rare. In summer the temp can be 115 with blistering sunshine but low humidity. Even when the temp is 115 in the day in summer it can drop to 45 that same night. The land there is generally very flat and it is some of the best agricultural land in the world, especially with irrigation from the Sacramento river. Go and see "Old Sacramento" the preserved old part of town from the 1800s. There is generally lots to do, and Lake Tahoe or San Francisco are only a short 1-2 hour drive away. I liked to go and visit Lake Berryessa as well as the Napa wine country, also both easy drives away.

Is it too late to talk you out of it?

If you like trees, Sacramento rates pretty well. We even have a few nice restaurants (maybe 8 to 10 that would do well in any city). But the weather is not so great. Fall and Spring are wonderful and mild, but very short. Winters are rarely severe--no snow at this low elevation, and very few days below freezing.
But 6 disabled people died over the last 3 weeks in a heat wave in small rooms without air conditioning. Summers can be pretty tough.

The two most interesting thing about Sacramento is that it's situated on two rivers, which makes for lots of fun in the summer, and that it's less than 2 hours by car from San Francisco, and less than 3 from Lake Tahoe and the Sierra. Want to sound like a local? Don't say "Sierra Mountains" Sierra is Spanish for jagged mountain peaks. Just say, "The Sierras."

P.S. Don't know your status, but this is not the town to be a single woman in.

I am 27 now and have been checking my California weather every day for about ten years.I live in Encinitas California, about 30 miles north of San Diego.Sacramento's weather is much like East County San Diego, hot and dry most of the year. The temperatures climb to about a hundred in the summer and it's winter low,in it's low forties, depending on your homes elevation. As far North as San Francisco, expect a fare share of rain, streaming off the Pacific, during the Winter months, but other than that the weather will be warm and beautiful all year round. It's people are diverse in culture and it's nightlife is o.k..Northern California, city style...Take care and may your move to Sacramento be a good one...tom science
