When I traveled to China, I expertise some food that was very unlike that I am accustom to in the USA. I took photographs of some of the food that I ate. My girlfriend could not believe it. I took her to a restaurant where she could see real Chinese food (chicken feet, etc). , not Americanized Chinese. She considered in something like a ‘horror movie’.

She and I are going to spend a week in Belize (Central America) next year. Will she enjoy the food, or will she experience a crash diet for a week.

Belizeans just love peppers and hot (pepper) sauce: habanero's and jalapenos, the hotter the better!

Johnny cakes, those flat round fluffy biscuits cut open and covered with melted butter! Or maybe filled with ham and cheese slices.

Taco vendors are at almost every corner offering corn or flour tortillas, with shredded chicken, onions, cabbage and cilantro.

In every Belizean town you can find people selling hot delicious meat pies from a basket on their bicycle, or walking through the streets with a bucket of conch fritters, a seasonal treat, or corn and chicken tamales or tamalitos, commonly called dukunu.

Rice is such an important food in Belize that some have renamed the dinner hour "rice hour" but it could just as easily be "bean hour." Belizeans love their beans--particularly red beans. And the rice? Twice as nice cooked with real grated coconut.

A lot of items are stewed: stewed fish, oxtail, beef, chicken or pork. There is even stewed lobster, when the season is open. Game meats are popular too, with Belizeans enjoying deer, Hicatee, iguana or gibnut. Side dishes are generally potato salad made from real Heinz salad dressing, the key ingredient that makes Belizean potato salad Belijun, or coleslaw.

I've been to Belize.

When you are close to the ocean, there is a variety of seafood. Conchs are very good, you can have it raw (ceviche), fried, baked, etc. Lobsters are also plentiful and cheap. They also have a lot of stone crab. If you are out on any of the cayes and you like seafood, you will be fine.

In the interior, there is of course less seafood. You get a lot of things people might consider "Mexican" - beans and rice kind of dishes with and without tortillas. You get a lot of "normal" stewed meats - beef, chicken, pork, etc. (I had something called gibnut as well, which seemed to be something like a badger). You get a lot of fried plantains.

I found Belize food-wise to be absolutely fine. Compared to some places I have been (like Cambodia or Iceland), there were no issues at all.

Just don't try the Belize wine (ugh). But Belkin Beer is good (you get a belly full of Belkin!).
