Can be good and bad. You'll be forced to live with strangers from all faculties. If you click with people in your house / on your floor you can make some really good friends. Just don't expect to get a lot of studying done at the dorm. In first year I did all my studying in the library and did fine. You may want to kill people who come home from drinking at 3 am when you've got a mid-term the next day. It's still an interesting life experience. Try to be social the first couple of weeks as this seems to be when most people make friends and groups kind of get formed from there. Also get to know some people in your faculty so you're not totally dependent on the dorm crew. In short, make the best of the situation.
Excellent chance to hook-up with people of the opposite sex. Take full advantage of this if it's okay with your value system. You will never have a better chance to play the field than at university.
Things you'll need in your dorm room:
Fridge
Snacks
Posters
Stereo
birth control
Have fun

Awesome!
You'll be in a really small room with way too much stuff and a roommate that will get on your nerves, but you will be on your own for the first time, have tons of freedom, and will be able to have all sorts of parties and get togethers. If your hall is coed you will see people of the opposite sex 24-7-- when they look amazing and when they are drunk and when they look like they haven't slept in 2 days (midterms).
Have tons of fun, do your school work/studying and enjoy it. I love living in a dorm. Getting to know your neighbors and your RA will make your year so much more fun.

It is what you make of it. Although freshmen year and communal bathrooms are best for making new friends. Forced contact w/your neighbor while you are both waiting for the shower really does help.
The only dorm that had really crazy parties (to the best of my knowledge) was the apartment suite dorms I lived in my sr yr.

lots of fun!! You can build great relationships that could last a lifetime. Its best to move in a dorm your first year. This will allow you to get to know many people. On the "down side", your in small space so its best to get along with your room mate. Lock up your things before you leave if you don't trust your room mate and/or her/his friends.

Depends on your personality as to whether or not you'll enjoy it. I personally don't love it, but it's fun sometimes too. You can talk to your friends pretty much anytime and whenever you're bored there's people to talk to and do stuff with. The hardest part is learning to share a room and bathroom with people, especially if you've never had to before. Also make sure you organize yourself or you'll end up living in not so organized chaos.
