Baseball has been a lifelong love affair. I remember watching on television in the 1950s when Casey Stengel was still managing the Yankees. My father took me to my first game at Yankee Stadium in 1962, when I was only eight years old. It was against the Detroit Tigers. I don't remember much except that we sat behind home plate and that the Tigers won (tip o' the hat to Georgie Porgie), which pleased by father greatly because he had been a Tigers fan since the late 1920s (he had lived in Detroit, working for Ford) and a Yankee hater - and Giants fan - from the 1930s. I inherited his hatred of the Dodgers from him, plus I resented them and the Giants for leaving New York when I was only three.

My second game was in the Polo Grounds in 1963. Duke Snider was playing left field for the Mets, and we were in outfield seats near him. The Pirates won, 4-3. After that, I went to quite a few games at both Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium, including the first Yankee Bat Day (got a Roger Maris bat), a doubleheader that the Twins swept. In fact, I don't remember ever seeing the Yankees win one in person, but my memory may be faulty. Last year I saw them at Safeco Field, and the Mariners won. My baseball scrapbook now has some of the play money dumped from the upper deck whenever Alex Rodriguez bats..

First I attended games with my father or a family outing, later it was also school trips, but of course as the 60s wore on and I grew older, I could go on my own, including to the Banner Day doubleheader in 1969 when I was then in high school...and how many people do you know passed up Woodstock for the Mets?

Yep. I grew up watching my Dad play fast-pitch softball, so that was a pretty good primer. My Dad and I watch the Tigers together now, and we talk baseball everyday.

Hell yeah I liked baseball.
I used to go down into the dirt part of my big backyard with an old beat up wooden bat and hit rocks while mocking the batting stances of every player on entire team lineups from the mid-70s.

I always had a glove on my hand. One time, my mom took a picture of me while I was in my little league uniform with my glove on my hand. She sent the picture to my grandma in Mexico who never heard of baseball. She wrote back to my mom and said she saw the picture and "What was wrong with his hand?"

Absolutely. I can't even remember the time in my life when baseball wasn't a part of it. It's the greatest game in the world.

No, I've never paid much attention to any sports. None of them held my interest.
We overweight Americans would do better to emulate those finely-conditioned athletes we see on our TV screens rather than just sitting on our fat azzes watching them.
