They are hard to clean. Or is it better to buy new ones?

Try using laundry detergent (Gain) and a toothbrush. That might work. I've used it on my shoes and it seemed to work ok. Probably best not to use bleach, it might stain your shoes a yelow color or it might make your shoes fall apart.

Kiwi's sneakers shampoo.
Rub it on, leave for a while before wiping it out.

But I do not know if it is available in your country.
