i wouldn't reccomend any diet for a pregnant woman, aside from a balanced one. I'd worry about the child and that it gets proper nutrients, not your waistline.

plus, a balanced diet is the theoretical ideal solution to any weight problem. as opposed to focusing on one certain group that deprives you of nutrition in other areas.

You shouldn't diet while you are pregnant and most certainly not on protein!

Your kidney's are already having double duty filtering everything. Ketones can be thrown out of whack if you do this withOUT being pregnant-and can be fatal for you and baby if you are.

Even diabetic pregnancies require a balanced diet. You might want to read up on this.

Pregnant women are not fat. They are pregnant. If you are dieting while pregnant, you are robbing the baby (who didn't ask to be created or starved) of vital nutrients. Being a parent means putting someone else's needs ahead of yours and the baby needs more than just meat to develop into a healthy baby.

I am a nutritionist

I am unsure if your question is regarding a high protein low carb diet or general recommendation for protein during pregnancy so I will give both answers

low carb/ high protein diets are unsafe, moreso during pregnancy because high levels of ketones will cause birth defects. high protein also puts aditional stress on the kidneys which can contribute to toxiema/ preclampsia. I do not recommend high protein or low carb diets to anyone (with the exception of epeleptics who do not benefit from antiseazure medication)

during pregnancy your body needs an additional 10g of protein a day during your second and third trimester (no extra is needed during your first trimester). This means you need 60g total which is much less than the typical american diet contains. for example a regular sized boneless chicken breast (10oz) contains about 75g of protein, a can of tuna (6oz) about 40 grams.
I do not normally need to recommend additional protein intake during pregnancy because the needs are being met.

what I do recommend, fresh fruit and vegetables and whole grain products. cut out processed foods (anything that comes in a can or a box) drinking enough water (8 measuring cups or more).

feel free to email me if you have diet or weight related questions

Ask your OB because you really shouldn't be dieting during pregnancy. If you are concerned about weight, here are some tips:
Exercise! It will help labor pain and make it a lot easier on you. Trust me, I know for a fact!
Don't eat for 2! Eat for you! Just eat what you would normally eat and you should be fine. You're going to gain weight no matter what you do.
Prenatal vitamins can sometimes diminish hunger! If the baby is getting the proper nutrients and you are too, you won't be as hungry.
If you are concerned about your weight during pregnancy, ask your OB. They know the best!
Another tip for women who experience nausea. When you wake up, don't drink anything yet. Try eating something dry, such as toast or crakers( no salt). Wait about 20 minutes or so before drinking anything. Water is the best thing, but juice is good too.

I'm a mom and prego with my second. If you have more questions, please feel free to e-mail me. I have tons of tips for ya!

No ethical doctor would allow you to be on a diet while pregnant (other than medical reasons). Protein diet can be bad for you. You need carbs and other nutrients for the developing fetus.

Completely not safe. Do not do a protein-only diet. It's not safe for your baby. Your baby needs complex carbs. All diets are off unless it's pregnancy-friendly!

NO DIET, unless prescribed by your OB/GYN -- the baby needs all different nutrients. Go on a diet after you deliver.

why would you want to be on a diet when you are pregnant??The baby is going to need a nutritious diet from you, not just one sort of nutrients.

Eating healthy. Remember to eat healthy because you can gain a lot of pounds while your pregnant. That's why you see so many fat women who have all them damn children. There's so many facilely challenged women out there lets take a moment of silence and pray for them.
