When a violent flash of lightning electricity ( between a cloud and the ground or from cloud to cloud), which is too hot-with an average temperature of 34,000 degrees celcius causes sudden expansion of the surrounding air, a very loud blast is produced and that makes thunder happen.

Thunder is merely the sound that lightning makes. A bolt of lightning super-heats the air around it to the point where it literally explodes. Thus the explosive sound of the thunder.

Thunder is caused by the very rapid expansion of air due to the heat generated by lightning (hotter than the sun)

When lightening occurs there is a rush of electrons through the air. The sound of thunder is the rush of other molecules rushing to fill the space the electrons were just drained from.

most of these answers is not logic sryy, but the main reason of havin a thunder is that :
the excissive frictions between clouds and its contents produces electric charges + and - , and the clouds acts as acapacitor which discharge togeather and sound occurs then

It is the sudden expansion of the surrounding air because of the heat of the lightning.
Temperature of lightining is the same as surface of the sun.

the sound when lightning crackles.lightning formswhen the top of the cumulonimbus has negative , in the middle has positive& the the ground has negative.just like a battery!

is caused by the temp, that changes in the atmosphere, a combination, of the COLD, AND THE HOT, is like a TUG OF WAR. between the GOOD AND THE BAD. if you want to loo at it that way.
i wish that JAMAICAN RUM could flow the same way.
