Good and evil are such arbitrary terms. The real deal is that they work with a lot of volitile chemicals, but they're chemicals that keep industries running in every country on earth. Of course, they're trying to turn a profit, but they're also trying to evolve with the times and clean up what was once one of the messiest acts in the oil business (and I'm not just talking about the tanker disaster in alaska). From what I understand, they take care of both their workers and shareholders. They also compete pretty fiercely in the oil market, which is a good thing for consumers. On the other hand, they're also something like the 35th biggest economy in the world, which means that they should have a lot of responsibility towards the rest of the world, especially the areas they're exploiting so the rest of us can get from point A to point B without breaking a sweat.

The more you look at all the angles, the more you realize that there is no good and evil, just parts of a whole; and whether you're thrilled or saddened about it, they're a major player in a major industry - the politics of which it probably takes a long time to understand.

I've attached a recent column on this very topic.

They certainly are receiving their share of criticism. Some is coming from politicians, but we know what their goals are. And I think that the biggest problem with the general public's perception is that lack of understanding. That does not necessarily mean XOM is good or bad, but people usually have a tendency to get upset about the wrong things.

They are like any huge company. All they care about is the bottom line. this is true of any shareholder company. The more the share holder makes on their investment , the more the company makes. I have a friend who hates the high gas prices but loves the dividend checks he gets each month from Exxon.
