"No. I do that which I perceive to be in my own best interest, just like everyone else does. If it betters humanity as a whole, great! If it doesn't....oh well."

So what if what is in your own best interest is directly opposed to the interest of another, or a whole group of people? Would you still act the same? If not than you do not act solely in your own best interest. If so than what do you offer this world to make your life so much more valuable than others'.

To Felix,
I'm just asking this question to try to understand where other people stand on the issue of personal freedom/indulgence and ethical behavior. Don't worry about me imposing this on anyone...if I could categorize my thoughts to some system of ideals I would say I'm a daoist.

I believe that it is my duty to live in accord with humanity. Many problems are caused by those who feel that they are going to live life however they want and don't care about the effects that it has on others. This is purely selfish and is the cause of a lot of the problems in the world today.

A simple small example of this is driving. How many people do crazy lane changes, insane speeds, or any other ludicrous behaviors because it gets them where they want to go faster, they have little regard if they run you off the road, make you slam on your breaks, or slow down all the rest of traffic.

I think that if all of us would live in consideration of others then the world and humanity as a whole would be bettered. I cannot change the world or humanity, but I can change myself, and by changing myself for good I can cause a positive influence on the world and the rest of humanity.

you cannot live your life that way, where does it all end,if you take your question too seriously you will either go mad trying too please everybody all the time or even worse you will invent for yourself a doctrine which prescribes what is best for all and end up standing on street corners shouting at passing cars, calm down - you can only touch those who are close to you...

"Most of the harm in the world is done by good people, and not by accident, lapse, or omission. It is the result of their deliberate actions, long persevered in, which they hold to be motivated by high ideals toward virtuous ends." -- Isabel Patterson

No, because if everyone did that-than there'd be no point of living.
