I'm a sophomore in college and I'm a chem major. I plan on going to pharmacy school afterwards. i know pharm schools are hard to get into, but i've heard that having an undergrad degree really helps, esp. if it's in chemistry, i imagine. and if that doesn't work out, what else can you do with a degree in chemistry? i know there's other stuff, i'm just hoping to hear stuff that's new. thanks!

I just graduated with a Biochemistry degree, planning on going to medical school. But, my advisors have said that if I don't do medical school, I could just do PhD or graduate school and become a researcher/teacher.

Graduate school is definitely an option. With just a BS you could work for a pharmaceutical company doing testing and/or research - most likely quality control or analytical method development (devising methods for testing different drug products). Working in an environmental lab is another option. In either case, analytical chemistry and knowledge of instrumentation (GC, HPLC, MS, ICP or AA) would be important. If your school offers an instrumental analysis course I would highly recommend it, if you think you may want to go this route. Teaching high school chem is another option. I have a BS in Chem, and have worked in environmental and pharmaceutical labs, and have also taught HS chem.

Hope this helps, good luck.

I have a BS in chemistry and work for a drug discovery company. Basically I do organic synthesis all day. If you like organic chemistry, you'd like this line of work.
