Moon, I absolutely LOVE this question! And I am fully prepared to knock your socks off with my answer. :)

Without question, the best and most influential decade of music in my life was the '80s. As that wonderful decade dawned, coinciding with my entrance into adulthood (even though a 17 or 18-year-old seems more like a kid to me now), I threw off the shackles of my older siblings' dated musical influences (that godawful, fossilized dinosaur rock of the loathsome '70s) and rose above it all, like the proverbial Phoenix rising from the ashes (of seriously bad music, lol).

I completely embraced the post-punk, British New Wave scene and ended up having a strong influence, myself, over many of those same elder sibs -- to say nothing of my own circle of friends. It was an awakening, transcending the music itself (which was and remains fantastic!), and I remain loyal to most of those same bands and artists to this day. In alphabetical order, here are some of my favourites:

ABC
Adam & the Ants
The Alarm
Altered Images
Bauhaus
Big Country
Blancmange
Blondie
David Bowie
Kate Bush
The Cars
The Chameleons
China Crisis
The Church
The Clash
Julian Cope
The Cult
The Cure
Depeche Mode
Thomas Dolby
Duran Duran
Echo & the Bunnymen
The English Beat
Eurythmics
The Fixx
A Flock of Seagulls
Freur
Peter Gabriel
Haircut 100
Heaven 17
House of Love
Human League
Icicle Works
INXS
The Jam
Jesus and Mary Chain
Howard Jones
Joy Division
Nik Kershaw
Lotus Eaters
Love and Rockets
Madness
Midnight Oil
The Mighty Lemon Drops
Modern English
Naked Eyes
New Order
Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark
The Police
The Pretenders
Psychedelic Furs
REM
Roxy Music
Pete Shelley
Simple Minds
Siouxsie & the Banshees
The Smiths
Soft Cell
Stone Roses
Talking Heads
Tears for Fears
The The
Thompson Twins
UB40
Ultravox
U2
The Waterboys
XTC

There are doubtless some errors of omission in the list above but I've done my best to pick my brain (and scan my CD collection) for names. Special thanks to the radio station that proved most influential in opening my eyes (ears, surely? lol) to a whole new world of sound: CFNY, 102.1, out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Cheers!

Thank you, also, for asking this wonderful question, Moon! You've made my day, mon ami. :)

Ah Moon, I love music! Too hard to decide...

Love the 70's 80's and 90's, even a few things after 2000.

Can't elaborate at the moment, should not even be at Answers considering my workload, but came here to see some friends, and had to answer such a question! My heart just has too many answers.
Besides I have already spotted an excellently delivered answer.

Cheers Luv!- J

sad to say, i'm a creature of the 1980s. by accident or by chronology, the 80s were my formative years. first taste of life, first try at so many things, and a soundtrack to back it all up.

playing in the background... take on me (a-ha) and with or without you (u2). if you listen closely you'll hear mony mony (billy idol) or need you tonight (inxs). and in the front, coming through loud and clear, don't get me wrong (pretenders) and don't dream it's over (crowded house).

close second, the 1970s or this decade (2000s). but the 80s were (and still are) where my turntable spins fastest :).

Well, to be very honest, Moon, there is really no ONE decade that has all of the songs that I like the most. Also, unlike most of the answerers above, I've never been overly fond of 80's music. Of course, there are a few exceptions to that (loved REO Speedwagon), but overall, it's certainly not my favorite era for music. I'm not sure why that is really, it just never held much appeal for me. I have very eclectic musical tastes, and listen to a wide range of music, including songs from the 60's and 70's, to new age, classical, celtic, jazz, and alternative.

If I'm in the mood to reminisce, I'll listen to music from Carly Simon, James Taylor, Carole King (one of my favorites!), Joni Mitchell, and The Moody Blues. If I'm in a funky, fun, silly mood, I love listening to disco music (yes, say what you will, but I LOVED it, lol); I even took disco dance lessons back in the day, and had an absolute BLAST! :)

Country music has always been my least favorite style of music, so you'll rarely ever find me listening to that. Of late, I've been listening to music that lets me drift dreamily away. I love music with an ambient quality, such as, Gnomusy, Amethystium, Secret Garden, Ryan Farish, and Enigma. This type of music seems to soothe me, and take me away on a wonderful cloud of sublime pleasure.

I'm honestly not sure that I could live without music, Moon, I absolutely ADORE it! You'll find me listening to music much more than watching TV, anyday. Thanks for your wonderful question, and I apologize if I went too far off on a tangent with my answer.

I like the 80's Rock and Pop (Toto, Van Halen, Def Leppard, etc...) 90's was Grunge & Hard Rock (Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, G'n'R...) and alternative (The Breeders, Gin Blossoms, The Cranberries, etc...)This decade is for Hip Hop and I don't know much of it. It's funny how our tastes change as we mature into adults.

Hi moon! Hmmm..the 80's of course. Much of the music was synth pop and embarrassing but i have fond memories of flock of seagulls, duran duran, thompson twins, and many other bands i'm too ashamed to mention!
The 80's had by far the songs i like the most.

This decade? Not sure about that one. Have to think about it...............

OK, I'm a total geek. I love music from the 1920's. Early jazz & blues just speaks to me. Back then you had to be a real musician since there was no such thing as overdubs and production. And with the recording process being expensive, you got one shot to get it right so they really put a lot of energy into every recording.

You can find thousands of mp3's from the 20's here:

This is one of my favs, The Memphis Jug Band doing "Memphis Shakedown". Counterpoint scat solos and a stellar example of blues fiddle:

80's

There are so many one-hit wonders from that decade that were good.

But I love Genesis, Talking Heads, Elton John, Van Halen, Journey, etc...
