I believe the first answer by Vanessa is partly correct though incomplete.

To understand why HAMAS and Hizbollah are fighting Israel you must start with the religious beliefs that motivate them. They are both Islamist organizations that believe that jihad is a holy duty of Muslims.

The world, for the fighters of these two terrorist organizations, is divided into two camps - darul Harb (abode of war) and darul Islam (abode of Islam). The abode of Islam refers to land controlled by Muslims while darul Harb refers to land controlled by infidels.

They believe it is their duty to wage jihad to expand darul Islam at the expense of darul Harb. Permanent peace with darul Harb is not allowed. Truces lasting no more than 10 years are permitted.

Israel is of course part of darul Harb. Making matters worse, Israel also sits on land that was once part of darul Islam. According to Islamic Shariah, once a land is part of darul Islam, it must remain so till Judgement day.

Should it be lost to darul Harb, war must be waged to recover it.

Those of you who think this all ends with Israel are sadly mistaken. Portions of eastern and even western Europe also once used to be part of the abode of darul Islam.

They want have a 100% Muslim world headed by an all powerful Ayatollah (Mullah or Caliph). It's that simple.

Check out history and geography and how much oil they control..If they get what they want they and take the world back 100 years the only oil one would need is for lanterns.

Hezbollah was going to use the captives to get some of its people out of jail (that they believe are "kidnapped" or wrongly held)

mostly, all of these groups want control of land and resources in their homelands, they use religion to justify and motivate the people, but its really all about land and resources, war ALWAYS is

the Arabs, Persians, and their allies are greatly out armed and outnumbered, conventional warfare won't work for them, they are desperate to save their land and their culture and so resort to small scale terrorism, its all they have

conflict in an area that supplies a product will always bring the supply of that product into question... which when the supply comes into question, prices rise...

in other words... if people are afraid the war could affect oil supplies, oil prices will go up... if oil prices go up... people who sell oil make much more money... arabs, persians have lots of oil to sell

money is a HUGE motivator...
