We haven't come through nigh on 4 billion years of evolution without weathering a storm or two. To take an example, we are just one of the kinds of things that our ancestors of 65 million years ago evolved into as a result of the last catastrophic change in the earth's environment.

How about a real scenario? The earth will not support billions of humans. What do we do? We systematically kill off, over a period of a few years, a few million people so the rest of us can live.
