Remove the valve cover and scrape it where the gasket is going to go both sides.You have to get all the old gasket off or it will not seal.Apply some blue glue to your valve cover and put your gasket on you can go ahead and put your bolts in the valve cover.Then apply your blue glue to the surface and set valve cover in place and tighten bolts.
blue glue is a gasket sealer it comes in diffrent colors but I always use the blue for valve covers.

Assuming you have the tools and some native mechanical ability this is not a monster job. However you will have to take a number of peripheral parts off the engine to access the valve cover. Just keep everything organized and labeled.
First remove the air intake hoses and any wiring, hoses, etc that are on top of the valve cover. Use a marker and make marks or draw diagrams where everything goes for re assembly. When you have the necessary parts removed to access the valve cover, unbolt it and carefully lift it out of the way. Watch for the small rubber plugs attached to the valve cover and ensure they do not get lost. Remove the old gasket and clean the cover and the head surface carefully and completely. Use a gasket sealer or silicone sealer sparingly. Reassemble and torque every thing to specs. Test run and look for leaks. Good luck, and welcome to the world of do-it-yourself.

YES! get a "Haynes" or "Chilton" manual for the model Chrysler or dodge you have.
Suggestions include have a digital camera handy and take some pick before you take things off. use masking tape and a pen to mark where things go. you don't want to mess up vacuum lines. after removal be sure to clean both surfaces well. read the instructions that come with the new gaskets. ( they may want some kind of sealer applied.)
If you follow the directions it shouldn't be too hard for a beginner.
oh when you get your gasket ask them for a P.C.V. valve and replace the old one. theses help keep pressure from building up that sometimes cause oil leaks, like around the valve covers.
Did you try tightening down on the old ones first? don't go crazy just snug.
Tools: 1/4 in drive socket set w/ 3"& 6"extensions, tape,pen, pliers, screw drivers(straight and Phillips) this should get you started . good luck.

hi if you look at the top of your engine you will see your roker cover some have 2 bolts through the top others have around 10 bolts all way round the lip take out all the bolts and keep safe lift of rocker cover and clean away old gasket from flange and engine where flange sits dip finger in oil on top of engine beside rockers smear rocker cover flange with little oil do the same on the engine where the gasket sits now place gasket on either rocker cover or engine and refit rocker cover over the top fit all bolts hand tight untill they are all in then tighten up the bolts but do not over tighten they dont need to be to tight and you dont want to strip them start car and check for leaks if there is a leak tighten bolt a little more
