You will not find many more messed up kids than those that were child stars. Nor will you find teen actors who are less spontaneous than those that have started at a very early age. Of course, there are huge exceptions to this but a TV network here frequently airs Child Stars. On this show, the adults talk about loss of childhood, career, money, drugs, alcohol and being a has-been at 16. It is really sad.
Acting can be great fun for kids as long as they do not take themselves too seriously and make education their main focus.

Try local little theatres to start, so he can get some experience under his belt. There are always spots open for children in the shows and there are a lot of theatres that let kids join their companies for free. After his son gets a taste for it, look for local commercials that are in need of child actors. Almost everybody starts out small, so it's best to keep your eyes and ears open for all opportunities big and large. You can never audition too much. But the best advice I can give your friend is to listen to his child's feelings. Let him do what he wants to do while keeping a watch on it, and don't force him to do anything he's unhappy doing. He's a child and acting tends to rob kids of the happiest time of their lives. Let him be a kid first and act on the side.

Well first you have to move away from L.A. because everyone knows you need to start somewhere else first, and then move to L.A. So first move away from L.A. Then start working in the industry... when you are ready, people will tell you to move to L.A.

He should have some photos taken and sent to an agency. If someone is serious about working with him - they ARE NOT going to charge for anything. Too many places want you to pay them to take classes, etc. He will have to take classes eventually though, if he is serious.
