I believe it is either C or C++, but you can write extensions for Firefox using XML and JavaScript. For a great tutorial on doing this go to: http://www.rietta.com/firefox/Tutorial/overview.html
Because odds are you won't want to touch the Firefox code base unless your a very expirenced programmer.
