It seems that my hamster wakes up when I go to bed and I really wnat to spend more time with her. Is there any way I can alter her nocturnal sleep schedule so I get some time with her... p.s. do you think it's a good idea to let a 4 year old hold a hamster?

That's the problem with hamsters, and also why I always recommend animals like mice instead. Most small animals are nocturnal by nature, but most are also willing to change this or at least won't be grumpy when you wake them up.

Hamsters are the exception from my experience (I used to have one, I also work at a pet store), they also just seem to get worse as they get older :( You can just keep trying, wake her up gently and quietly to play during the day, and try to stay around the same time each day. This might work, but with hamsters you never know for sure.

As for a four year old- just make sure he/she holds the hamster over the cage or a box or something as hamsters have a tendency to simply walk right off of one's hand, and four year olds can be clumsy. This can make a bad combination if not prepared for. At least if it falls this way, it can't escape. Also remind the child not to squeeze too hard, that's probably the second biggest problem.

Nothing wrong with letting a 4yr old hold a hamster(if supervised) to me......but as far as changing its sleep habits, well its called nocturnal for a reason

get a gerbil, they are not nocturnal. you cant change the times they sleep. yes anyone can play with a hamster as long is it doesnt bite. my friend played with my hamster and it barely even nibbled at her finger, and she dropped it. it like broke its back or something and died...pity.

sometimes u can get them to get up earlier, but often they'll be grumpy. u could try taking taking her out as late as possible before u go to bed(not middle of afternoon) daily and she may eventually get up on her own at that time. but it does stress them and she may bite. or if u get up early u can try then but it has to be daily. if after couple wks shes not gettiing up on her own it prob wont work. its kind of like asking u to get up at 4am or got to bed at 2am. its their nature. the 4 yrd old could handle them but only sitting down. u could put them in an empty tub with the drain CLOSED or they have these lttle fenced pens u can buy and set on the floor and the 4 yrd old can get in it with her. wouldnt let the child handle it standing as they are quick & easily dropped. u could sit them on the couch togther but still watch closely. hamsters have poor depth perception and will walk right off the end of a couch.
