How difficult is it to change a PDA's battery?

I have a Zire 72 and am starting to see that it's battery is not lasting as long as it used to. I am questioning whether I should replace the internal battery. It would mean that I would have to buy a Torx screwdriver set and get the battery from a 3rd party battery maker. I dont have much experience, but don't want to have to send it to Palm and spend a lot of money. What advice do you all have?

My Sony Clie, at about 3 years old, wasn't holding a charge as long as it used to. No way was I paying Sony some exhorbitant sum to replace the battery.

I got a compatible one on batteries.com. I carefully disassembled the Clie. I was able to do it with just small flathead screwdrivers. It took tweezers to unplug the battery connector, but I was able to get it without too much trouble. Reassembly was a bit tricky, as certain parts had to be in certain positions to work properly, but after a few tries I had it.

All in all, took about an hour, but that's probably becasue I'm really not that good mechanically. Just go slow, carefully observe how everything goes together as you disassemble, and you'll be fine.

As much as I am a fan of Palm products, I am not happy about the battery replacement process. The short answer is that if you open the unit yourself, you void any warranty on this unit. So the answer to either send it to Palm for replacement, or buy a new unit.
