I purchased old nesting Tupperware containers at a charity sale. The containers are good condition, unfortunately, the containers have a strong plastic smell. What methods and/or products can I use to get rid of the smell and still be able to use the containers for food storage? Or is the material the containers are made out of in the process of degradation?

Some polypropolene/ethylene can retain their smell. Heating plastic can change their form and thus molecular structure. You can check manufacturer(not tupperware I mean raw materials Plasticote, GM, Bayer...) web sites if you know what kind of plastic, there is often a data sheet with test results on the material.

I avoid using plastic in the microwave. If you put the contents of the old containers into their own freezer bags first, you probably would avoid any transfer of odor to your food.

Try making a paste with baking soda and water. Slather this on the sides of the containers and let them sit for a day or two. You may have to repeat this process once or twice to completely get rid of the smell.

They have came out with a new Dawn dish soap for plastic. It has orange or something in it. YOu might try that or lemon juice and then rinse it and set it outside to air for a day.

Good Luck

I had a similar problem with new storage containers and once I ran them through the dishwasher with liquid dishwasher detergent, they were fine.....
If that doesn't cut it enough, lemon juice works great to reduce strong smells.
When I worked in resturaunts we used lemon juice to help cut the smell of onions on our plastic cutting boards after dicing.

I would try airing them out, maybe a sunny window sill, and maybe a wash with some baking soda.

I don't think the plastic is degrading, that stuff is all non toxic.
