My grandfather died suddenly in 1987 of a heart attack. My husband was at work - he worked from 3:00 to 11:00 - and I wasn't able to call him at the factory with the bad news. I'd cried myself to sleep by the time he got home.
He woke me by sitting on the edge of the bed, telling me about a strange thing that happened as he ate at a picnic table outside the mill. Now all the while he's telling me this, I'm shaking my head, trying to figure out whether I'm awake or not...
He said, "I was finishing my sandwich, and no one else was on break. The big compressor inside shut down for maintenance, so it was quiet all around. I swear, three different times, I heard your grandfather's voice, saying, Happy birthday, you big goofball!" Now my grandfather seemed to adore my husband, yet he called him "goofball" religiously behind his back. Gramps told my Grandma three days before his death that he missed my husband's birthday the previous week; he looked forward to wishing him a happy belated one. Grandma told me about that conversation at the hospital, after we found out Gramps didn't make it.
My husband nearly slid off the edge of the bed when I blurted out how Gramps passed away that afternoon.

How 'bout a guardian angel story? Once, about 10 years ago, when I lived just outside the city, I was driving home from work and was in a real hurry. The road I was driving on was a state route, kind of out in the country. Anyway, the speed limit was only 55, but I was going at least 70. When I got near my house, I noticed there was a car sitting in the middle of the road, stalled. I couldn't swerve to the left, 'cause there was an oncoming car too close for me to miss. I couldn't swerve to the right, 'cause there was a place that worked on semi-trucks there, and 3 semis were parked there. I just KNEW I was gonna hit that car in front of me. I closed my eyes tight, and grabbed the steering wheel tight, bracing myself for the crash. After a couple of seconds I realized nothing was happening, and when I opened my eyes, the oncoming car was already passed me, and I had somehow gone around the stalled car without hitting it. I was also turned left onto the street behind my house. I don't know who, but SOMEBODY was watching out for me that day!

Ok, I was in Pennsylvania staying at this supposed resort. The place sucked and our cabin,I guess you can call it that, was worse than anything I'd seen before. There was this black stuff all over the carpet. Anyway, my room had 2 doors, one to the bathroom, and the other that lead to this little hot tub thing (that didn't work, by the way). I was having a hard time sleeping, but I did finally nod off. Then when I woke up I glanced at the door to the hot tub. It was open, and then it closed itself! I got up to see if there was anyone in there, but there wasn't. And you could only go in and out one way. I was so freaked out that I wouldn't sleep by myself the rest of our vacation.

My uncle used to be on the sheriff's department in Orange County, CA. He was alone in his cruiser one night out in the middle of nowhere and came across a big truck on the side of the road with several very large men standing around it. He pulled up to see if they needed any help, and they surrounded him and pulled weapons. Just as he was beginning to believe he was going to be killed, another cruiser pulled up beside them with two very large officers inside. One of them yelled, "Hey Mel - everything okay here?" The guys around my uncle all hid their weapons and moved far enough away that my uncle could get back to his car, and he told the officers in the cruiser that he was okay. They drove away, and my uncle was able to, also.
When he got back to the station, he checked to see who those officers were, so he could thank them. But all the dispatch records for that night said that there were no two-man cruisers out that night, and that he was the only officer recorded as having been within forty miles of that place the entire evening. He kept his eyes open, for years afterward, trying to maybe see those two guys again at department functions or something, and never did.
Not exactly a ghost story, but still.
