Try a hardware based firewall. They are much better then any software one you will read about on here. The price has came down on most of them so its affordable for the home user.
Most of the ones mentioned here, including Zones, Mcafee, Black Ice, Nortorns, all have had security breeches in the last year. The drivers of "SOME" of these products are the security risk. Thats not a good thing when these products are suppose to protect your computer. With that said, I recommend to many of my clients, even the ones who just use them at home, Watchguard and SonicWall. There are a few others, but those are easy ones to install and you don't need a professional to come out and set it up for you.
Send me an email if you have more questions.
I hope this helps, Good Luck.
On the statement above, since there are many users who use those products (My intention is not to bash them,)
I'm listing a link to those issues with software firewalls and this link covers about 60 software based firewalls.

I've never had any probs with Macafee...some of the freebies like AVG on a 3 month trial can be good too...but some of the trial versions can be a bit temperamental as they are downloads...read reviews...it's the best way...see what your needs are and choose a programme to suit. Norton was a pain in the ***...make sure you remove one completely before you start another.

If you are using WinXP you can use the built in firewall. Regarding Norton doing so many checks and slowing your computer. The choice is yours. I will stick to Norton.

You have a number of options if you have Windows installed.
> Zone Alarm
> McAfee
> BitDefender
> Windows Firewall
Alternatively you can use your router's firewall if you are comfortable with configuring it.
If you have used Linux in the past, you have a myriad of options. You can setup a Linux firewall to protect your entire Windows network or a hybrid network of Windows and Linux PCs'

Any software firewall will slow your computer down. Like the first poster said, you can use the built in Windows firewall or get a NAT router.

A very good free firewall program is Zone Alarm. Kim Komando recommends it to her listeners who can't afford or wants to pay for one. You can download it at this safe download site. In the second red box down.
