Be honest, tell them you're really tired and feeling under the weather (cramps do make you feel under the weather -- don't tell the guys this though - that is personal stuff you may share with a husband, but not guy friends)

It's fine to give specifics, but the truth is also, "I don't want to go swimming tonight." It took me too many years to realize that it was okay for me to decline an invitation, politely, but that I didn't have to give a long explanation. It's not other people's rights to know private reasons, if you don't feel comfortable sharing.

Where you go swimming, do they have a hot tub?
If they do, then why not go and sit in the hot tub a while. The warm water will help to ease the cramps.

I know exactly how you feel. Just tell your friends the truth that you really don't feel good. Tell them that maybe you could go some other time.

I vote for the truth. Just tell them it's "that time of the month". Most guys are really intimidated by "female issues" and probably won't ask any more questions.
