Downtown, it can get sunny and warm. Sometimes along the coast (Ocean Beach, Pacifica, down Highway 1) it can get foggy and chilly. Usually, a cardie or a light jacket will suffice. Sandals are ok, but if you are interested in walking the streets of SF, maybe consider bringing a pair of comfy shoes (because of the hills, etc.)
The weather is so finicky in SF that you can be in the cold & fog of the avenues, and then hit Japan town a block later and be sunny and warm. Just be prepared.
Sonoma is usually quite warm, so shorts and a t-shirt (or tank top) is sufficient. However, bring a cardie or a light jacket for the night, or if you want to go to SF downtown.
Downtown is somewhat fashionable... depends on where you are going to hang out. Union Square or Levi's Plaza is usually where the fashionistas are. Santana Row in San Jose attracts some hip folks, but also lots of regular folks as well. So you will find a few fashion-conscious folks, but they don't really care whether you are hip with the fashion. The majority of the bay area folks are not.
My rule of thumb is NYC is the fashion capital, Los Angeles is about 6-12 months behind NYC, and SF is about 12-18 months behind NYC.
Have fun in the Bay Area!!!

In most areas, people could care less about what you're wearing. It's a quirky city anyways, so you'll probably be seeing weird fashions yourself. You might not want to wear anything with words on it, just in case and if you want to get some "cool" points. For example, wearing an Ambercrombie & Fitch shirt while walking around the Haight area might attract some sneers. Anyways, at the end of August the weather shouldn't be too cold, but always bring some kind of windproof jacket. Wind is the main source of any chilliness, and whenever I go, I just wear a t-shirt and bring along a sweatshirt or light jacket just in case. And of course, check the weather forecast before you go! Shoes shouldn't matter too much, just something comfortable to walk in.

San Francisco is chilly in the summer and starts to warm up in sept. I'd bring a light jacket and jeans...some long sleeve t's and a few short sleeve t's. The key to san fransisco is layering!!! Becuase the weather is so different, and people tend to be a little more relaxed, fashion is as well. They are fashion forward in their own way...there are a lot of smaller indie designers in san fransisco...
bring comfortable shoes...plan on doing a ton of walking and walking up lots of hills!!!!
have fun!!

I'm from southern california recently up here in San Francisco. The one thing i learned is if you are used to a warm summer you will freeze out here in the evenings. Dress in LAYERS because one minute it's hot here and then it snaps cold, tends to be foggy a lot in summer here. It's not New York but a lot of people are very fashion forward, but also a ton of tourists so it's very mixed. Anything goes out here.

im from the bay area and its been pretty cool out here. you should wear jeans and bring along some cute tops and definately pack at least one warm jacket. otherwise i think youll be fine. its been about 70 to 80 mid-day. and yes, san francisco is pretty big on fashion, but urban fashion, not the runway styles. just wear whats comfy and youll fit in just fine.

It is so freezing there so you should bring a nice warm jacket or sweatshirt (of your choosing), long jeans or pants, tennis shoes, long sleeved shirt, and in some places yes it's very big on fashion but in some places no it's not fashionable at all.It just depends on where you go. Good luck!

You are smart if you wear clothes that you can layer
SF can be cool, but Napa Valley will be much warmer
The fog is our natural air conditioning, and it can really cool off the evenings.
Bring comfortable shoes for walking (and waiting in line for the Cable Car) Lots to see if you are up to some walking and/or some public transit.
People in SF are fairly casual, but if you want to dine in our upscale restaurants, you will want to wear "business casual" at the very least
Enjoy your vacation

San Francisco can get chilly at night, so take a light jacket or sweater. There's alot of gays there, so dress to not attract them, but at the same time, something tasteful.
