I know the country was under Spanish rule for 100 yrs but before that, they had native filipino names. Isnt naming your child a spanish name a reminder of the Spanish colonialism. France colonized vietnam but you dont see them with French names. Also, a very small percentage of filipinos have spanish blood. Im asking because I met a filipino today who clearly looked asian, but his name was Jose Garcia.

This is a generalization. . .I am Filipino and my name is Catherine. My Filipino cousins have the names Sophia, Mary, Jeanne-Marie, Jody, etc.

Also, because of the Spanish colonialism, many Filipinos have Spanish blood and therefore Spanish last names. As for first names, many of my friends have a variety of names, not all are Spanish names. You can't assume that "filipinos continue to give their kids spanish names" just because you met one Filipino with the first name Jose.

maybe they like the names! Spain (over)ruled them for 500 years, that's a long time and to this day spanish is almost a second (well 3rd really) language there. I suppose they feel spanish names are actually filipino names now since they've been using them for so long.

Besides you can name your kids whatever you want,
Kameko, Juan, Heinz, Marie, Isabella , Marta whatever the heck you like (even moon unit and dweezil)
