I have a degree in broadcast journalism and I'm trying to find a job in my field but afraid it won't come soon enough. Should I get a job "just for now" and work to pay my bills or wait to find the dream job that will determine my career? I doubt doing both will give me any flexibility for one or the other. I'm stuck...HELP ME PLEASE!

Sometimes, you just have to do what you have to do to pay the bills. If your financial situation is OK now, I would wait until I find a job in my field, and meanwhile try to plump up my resume with volunteer or intern activities in the field. It's easy to take a job outside your field and get sidetracked, and never get back into your field.
However, if you are short on funds, try to find a temp job that you can be OK with for now, and still submit your resume everywhere. That way, when you find a great job in journalism, you can easily quit the temp agency with no strings attached.
Good luck!

As always, the answer is "it depends." It depends on how little you can live on. You can absolutely get a "for now" job while you look for something better. Since you don't care about that job you can take time off as needed for interviews etc. So that can be done- people work and look for jobs all the time.

The less you can live on, the more flexibility you have since the lower paying jobs don't expect much from you. Try a temp service- which is very flexible, too and can pay slightly better.

Ideally, given the nature of the broadcast biz you can get a part-time job somewhere and even get a pretty so-so job in your field of choice so you can make contacts.

If that is the field you really want, get a roommate, get a part-time job and keep going for it!

"Dream job" remember there's about 1000 other people in your shoes, all going after that one dream job .

Your lucky just now because you are fresh out of college, and in a position to get some money and get some experience. For journalism - college is good - but what is valued more is life experience. So a job for the bills might kill 2 birds with 1 stone

Jobs these days are very flexible - a journalism job no, but before then a waitress job or whatever u decide - go part time, etc you can get flexibility in that, which will allow you to continue to fight for your dream job.

Be practical now, and the rewards will come - if you live in a fantasy holding out forever for a dream job that might not come - you'll be in a really bad situation in couple of months.
good luck.

Peace,

I was right where you are, however the job market wasn't like it is today.

I would suggest this, get a job to meet your needs of bills, fun, and investing. This job may not be in your field.

I know your desire is to work in your field. As you work, volunteer somewhere that's in need of your journalism skills. This will allow you to hone your skills and keep your resume fresh with current applied work through volunteering.

I have a great resource you can go to find something to suit your time and schedule. Continue to search for your dream job because it is out there waiting on you! ;o)

I hope you have found some value in what I've shared.

Peace,

I would suggest getting a "just for now" job, maybe one where you would work evenings or weekends (retail, Starbucks, whatever) and try to spend a few days a week doing unpaid work at a newspaper, TV or radio station. I'm actually not sure that the opportunities are there in TV and radio (and it also depends where you live) but newspapers would never turn away free help. I used to work for a newspaper, and we had people do that all the time - and it often turned into full-time work or paid assignments. I know your target it broadcast, but that's such a difficult world to break into. But at least this way, you could get some media experience and eventually build up to your dream job. Good luck!
